This week’s questions in the #SYW challenge.
What’s your go-to for unwinding after a stressful event or day?
This all depends on the nature of the stress. My three favourite de-stressors are: lively conversation with family or friends over a good meal, listening to an uplifting piece of music, or sitting quietly by the river/walking through the woods with only the sounds of nature for company.
The plane you’re flying in is going to crash, no survivors. If you had one song you could listen to before it happens, what would it be? Another tough question to answer. I’m sure I’d be thinking of my family so I expect I’d want to hear a song reminding me of those I love the most. As a bonus, this one has a coincidentally apt title.
What is one thing you’re really, really good at and not ashamed to admit it?I’ll own up to baking a pretty decent Victoria sponge: light, fluffy and filled with jam and cream. Yum!
Would you rather lose all of your money and valuables or all of the pictures you have ever taken?
Money and valuables, every time. Pictures are memories and can’t be replaced. I’m sure I would find a way of earning more money.
And lastly, what were you grateful for or something that made you smile during the past month?
Recently I’ve been grateful for air travel. My sister lives in the US but thanks to the ease and affordability of modern air travel she was able to return for a short visit last month. I also visited her in the summer so, not for the fist time, it occurred to me that similar journeys, made by countless thousands of emigrant Scots before her to the US and to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, would have taken weeks by ship in cramped, dangerous and miserable conditions.
This image shows the Emigration Stone at Cromarty Links on the north-east coast of Scotland. It was carved by Richard Kindersley and erected on October 10, 2002. It bears the names of 37 emigrant ships which sailed from Cromarty harbour in the 1830s and 1840s, bound for what were then the British colonies. The list of ship names includes Ami, Brilliant, Canada, Diligence, Economist, Good Intent, Headleys, Industry, John, Lady Grey, Lamb, Planet, Salamis, Triton, Vestal and Zephyr.
